Alehousewells Primary Nursery School is situated in the village of Kemnay approximately 17 miles from Aberdeen and 6 miles from the town of Inverurie. The village is in a rural setting and has several shops and businesses. The school is nondenominational. The catchment area includes designated zoning of mainly local authority and some private housing within Kemnay and extends into rural outlying areas.
The school is very much part of the Kemnay Community and there are effective links with Kemnay Academy and the other primary schools in the Community Schools’ Network. There is an active Parent Council which supports the school effectively. The school building is semi-open plan and has eight teaching areas available.
There is a linked re-locatable unit with additional toilet facilities. The Nursery and Support for Learning occupy two classroom areas.
The school hall is multi-functional as it is used for dining purposes, physical education and drama. There is a meeting room/parents room.
The school has grassed and tarmac playground areas and climbing play facilities.
There is a new Sensory Room for any pupil who needs support. There is also a new Sensory Garden with raised planters which has been planted by the pupils, with herbs and plants.

EDUCATION SCOTLAND INSPECTION
In March 2025, Alehousewells School and Nursery were inspected by Education Scotland Inspectors. The school received 2 Satisfactory and the nursery received 2 Good. We are all very proud of the findings. Please read the report via Alehousewells School | Inspection Report | His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education in Scotland
The inspection team found the following strengths in the school’s work:
• The effective leadership of the acting headteacher is having a positive impact on learning and teaching across the school. She has quickly gained the respect of the whole school community. She is supporting staff in the nursery and primary stages well in their improvement agenda. As a result, children’s experiences and progress are improving.
• The warm relationships across the school and nursery. Children in the school and nursery learn and play in a caring environment. Staff know the children, their families and the community very well. They work well as a team as they develop new whole school approaches to ensuring children make better progress in their learning.
The following areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the headteacher and a representative from Aberdeenshire Council:
• Continue to improve attainment in literacy and numeracy and mathematics.
• Review approaches to planning and assessment to ensure all children in the nursery and school make progress across all areas of the curriculum. In doing so, ensure all children receive appropriate challenge in their learning.
